Web Design

    Desynthesis Website

“Promoting the discovery of design thinking; utilizing various media formats, case studies and designer profiles to build a greater understanding of design thinking as a method of problem solving.” The site’s name comes from hearing an interview with Bill Moggridge, one of the founders of IDEO. He spoke of the process of synthesis in design. Within fifteen minutes I went and bought the domain, desynthesis.com.

    • All content areas are collapsed upon arriving at the site for the first time. Using a cookie the site remembers the state in which the user left the site in. This enables the user to pick up where they left off in their discovery of design thinking.

    • The user can expand each content area as they progress in understanding in the practice of design thinking.

    Be Ready Guide Website

In the spring of 2011 I had stumbled across a brochure that many Red Cross chapters use. It's called "The Be Ready Book". This brochure is over 20 years old. The subtitle of the brochure is "Prepare Your Family For Disasters With Help From Cool Cat, Ready Rabbit and Disaster Dog." It is a disaster preparedness guide for young children. It has coloring activities, crossword puzzles and little mazes in which you guide your pal to safety. The Be Ready Book has served it purpose for more than twenty years and would continue to do so. I would like to propose that the Be Ready Book be refreshed in content as well it’s delivery method. Although this is a challenging undertaking I think it has the possibility of being intensely rewarding in value to the public as well as a symbol of The Red Cross’ desire to reach an audience that is living and thriving in a digital world. It is my desire to provide disaster preparedness content for as many people as possible.

The Be Ready Book will be developed with two delivery methods in mind.
    • A browser based (non-flash) version, with the paramount mission to be accessible.
    • An app version that is both informative and interactive, for use on mobile devices.

Print Magazine

    pivotal

Two words defined this project, PROBLEM SOLVING. The theme of the magazine would be my decision. However, once theme was chosen it couldn’t be changed. Of course, I chose, “Pivotal, a magazine focused on pivotal moments throughout history” The articles were to be appropriated from any source of my choosing, but all other visual content had to be designed by me. Making a magazine that spans all of history would be difficult, but I was up for the challenge. Each article required a different solution, a solution that was distinct, while feeling part of the magazine as a whole. This is achieved through type treatment, color palette and the grid system implementation.

    Project Details:
    Magazine Masthead (logo mark)
    Front Cover
    Front of Book
    4 Feature articles
“Magnetic Resonance” - The MRI Machine
“The Man Who Stopped Time” - The life of Eadward Muybridg
“The Printing Press” - Gutenberg and His Printing Press
“The Future of Publishing” - The iPad and the publication Industry
    2 Departments
"Almost" - Moments in history that were almost pivotal
"DIY" - How to make your own Zoopraxiscope
    Special Insert
    “Found Object”
    Back of Book

    • This feature article was centered on Eadweard Muybridge as a pioneer in the world of photography and animation. Muybridge was also a very poor business man. The article includes some of his correspondence that demonstrates his poor business decisions.

Self Promotional

    Pocket Knife Mailer

There are many movements in graphic design, as there are numerous tools in a pocket knife. I believe one of my most valuable assets as a designer is not only my ability to get the job done but my ability to choose the right tool to accomplish the task. When I thought about constructing a self promotional piece, I asked myself, “What is something that represents me?” My first thought was of this pocket knife. I carry it on a daily basis. I have given many of them as gifts over the years, to people that have influenced my life to some degree. I wanted to make a large scale version to deliver some of my work to a potential employer. It was important to me that the self promotional be humorous and memorable. I didn’t want to produce a self promotional that was pretentious or sterilized in self-confidence.

    • The knife is constructed similarly to a real pocket knife. My goal was to develop a structure that was easy to reproduce and assemble. The content on the “blades” could easily be modified and adapted depending on the recipient of the self promotional.

    Business Card

After making the transition to a digitally focused portfolio I had to rethink, “What is something that represents me?” I was inspired by efforts of various designers to promote their social identity. I decided to develop a business card to share my “digital footprint”.

Book Cover

Good art inspires; Good design motivates.

Otl Aicher was one of the first designers that considered a company holistically. Whether he was producing marketing materials or branding and identity, he helped companies define their ethos and values. For Lufthansa he developed everything from the logo mark to the uniforms and flatware to be used on their airlines. He took this comprehensive approach for companies like ERCO, Braun, Bulthaup, BMW and projects like the entire design system for the 1972 Munich Olympics.

One of the most remarkable attributes of Otl Aicher’s character were his feelings regarding a designers great responsibility to be ethical in thought and practice. Although I don’t anticipate working on projects with the equivalent scope as Otl Aicher. I hope to always consider my projects on a holistic level, with integrity, remaining ethical to the Utmost.
